Type a time either way, like 1430 or 2:30 PM, and get the other. It also shows how the time is said out loud and works out how long a shift is, including overnight shifts. A printable military time chart is below. Nothing leaves your browser.

How to convert military time to regular time
1300 to 2359: subtract 1200 and add PM. 1430 − 1200 = 2:30 PM; 2215 = 10:15 PM.
0100 to 1159: drop the leading zero and add AM. 0930 = 9:30 AM; 1145 = 11:45 AM.
The two twelves: 1200 to 1259 is the noon hour, so 1215 = 12:15 PM. 0000 to 0059 is the midnight hour, so 0030 = 12:30 AM.
How to convert regular time to military time
PM (except 12 PM): add 12 to the hour. 2:30 PM = 1430; 11 PM = 2300. AM (except 12 AM): write the hour with a leading zero: 7:05 AM = 0705. 12 PM = 1200 and 12 AM = 0000. Military time drops the colon (1430); plain 24-hour time keeps it (14:30). The numbers are the same.

How to say military time
Read the hours and the minutes as two numbers: 1430 is "fourteen thirty", 2145 is "twenty-one forty-five". Whole hours use "hundred": 0700 is "zero seven hundred" (often "oh seven hundred"), 2000 is "twenty hundred". A leading zero is spoken: 0905 is "zero nine zero five". Adding "hours" at the end is common in the military and optional elsewhere.
Shift length across midnight
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift crosses midnight. Count up to 2400, then add the time after midnight: 1900 to 0730 is 5 hours + 7 hours 30 minutes = 12 hours 30 minutes, or 12 hours paid after a 30-minute unpaid break. For payroll, 12:30 is 12.5 decimal hours (the time to decimal calculator converts any total). On the two nights a year the clocks change, an overnight shift is an hour longer or shorter: see the daylight saving time shift calculator.
FAQ
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both. 0000 starts a day and 2400 ends it, so "Monday 2400" and "Tuesday 0000" are the same moment. Schedules and logs often write 2359 or 0001 to avoid confusion about which day is meant.
Is there a 2400 in military time?
Only as the end of a day. Times after midnight start again at 0000, so 0015 (not 2415) is 12:15 AM.
Who uses military time?
The armed forces, hospitals and nursing (charting medication times), police, fire and EMS, aviation, and many shift workers, because 24-hour time can't mix up AM and PM. Most of the world writes everyday times in 24-hour format too.
Why do some times have an h or a colon?
14:30 and 14h30 are the same 24-hour time written the European way. The converter accepts 1430, 14:30, 14.30 and 14h30.
