Daylight Saving Time Night Shift Calculator
Working through the night the clocks change? Enter your shift to see the hours you really worked. When clocks fall back, a 10 PM to 6 AM shift is 9 hours, not 8. When they spring forward, it is 7. Works for any time zone and uses your browser's own time zone data. Nothing leaves your browser.

Daylight saving time dates 2026 to 2028
| Year | US & Canada: clocks forward (2:00 AM → 3:00 AM) | US & Canada: clocks back (2:00 AM → 1:00 AM) | UK & EU: clocks forward (1:00 UTC) | UK & EU: clocks back (1:00 UTC) |

| 2028 | Sunday, March 12 | Sunday, November 5 | Sunday, March 26 | Sunday, October 29 |
The US and Canada change at 2:00 AM local time in each time zone (second Sunday in March, first Sunday in November). The UK and the EU change at the same instant everywhere, 1:00 AM UTC on the last Sunday of March and October: 1:00 AM GMT becomes 2:00 AM BST in London in spring, 3:00 AM CEST becomes 2:00 AM CET in Paris or Berlin in the fall. Places that don't change clocks: Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation), Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the other US territories, most of Saskatchewan, most of Mexico (since 2022; towns along the US border still change), and most of Asia.

Do you get paid for the extra hour?
If you are paid by the hour in the US, yes. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires pay for all hours actually worked (29 CFR Part 785), and on the fall-back night the clock shows 1:00 to 2:00 AM twice while you work through both. A 10 PM to 6 AM shift is 9 hours of work. That hour also counts toward the 40 hours a week that trigger overtime, so someone with 32 hours already that week ends the shift at 41, and the 41st hour is paid at time and a half. In California, work over 8 hours in a workday is overtime too, so the extra hour on a fall-back night shift is usually paid at time and a half there whatever the weekly total. Use the overtime calculator for the week.
In the spring the opposite happens: 2:00 AM jumps to 3:00 AM and a 10 PM to 6 AM shift is 7 hours of work. Federal law only requires pay for hours worked, so an hourly worker can be paid for 7. Many hospitals, plants and union contracts pay the scheduled 8 anyway. Your handbook or contract says which. Salaried exempt employees are paid the same salary either way.
FAQ
My time card says 8 hours. Is it wrong?
It may be. Paper time cards, many time clocks and most calculators work from the times on the clock face, and 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM looks like 8 hours. That includes our own time card calculator, which takes clock times without dates. Check your next pay stub for the change night, and ask payroll if the extra hour is missing. A record of your own punches (with the date) helps.
I clocked out at 1:30 AM on the fall-back night. Which 1:30?
On that night 1:00 to 1:59 AM happens twice: first on daylight time, then again on standard time. The calculator asks which one when your clock-in or clock-out falls in that hour. If you started at 10 PM and left at the second 1:30 AM, you worked 4.5 hours; at the first 1:30 AM, 3.5 hours.
What about 2:30 AM on the spring-forward night?
It doesn't exist: clocks jump from 1:59 AM to 3:00 AM. A time clock that shows 2:30 AM is usually still on the old time, which is 3:30 AM on the new time, and the calculator reads it that way.
Does a 24-hour shift (24/48) change?
Yes. A 7:00 AM to 7:00 AM shift that covers the fall-back night is 25 hours, and 23 hours over the spring-forward night. Firefighter and EMS schedules often have their own overtime rules (the 7(k) exemption), so check your department's policy. Plan the rotation with the rotating shift calendar.
