How to convert time to decimal hours

    Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. For 7 hours 45 minutes: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7.75 hours. If there are seconds, add seconds ÷ 3600 too.

Back to hours and minutes: keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 8.33 hours = 8 hours + 0.33 × 60 = 19.8 minutes, about 8 hours 20 minutes. (8.33 is itself a rounded 8:20: exactly, it is 8:19:48.)

Pay: payroll multiplies decimal hours by the hourly rate. 37 hours 45 minutes at $18.00 is 37.75 × 18 = $679.50.

    The 7.30 mistake

A time card that says 7:30 means seven and a half hours, which is 7.50 in decimal. Typing 7.30 into a payroll sheet pays 7 hours 18 minutes instead. At $18 an hour that one day pays $131.40 instead of $135.00; over a 5-day week it's $18 short. Always convert the minutes before multiplying.

    Minutes to decimal hours chart

Decimal hours are rounded to two places (payroll hundredths). The Tenths column is for billing in tenths of an hour, where each started 6 minutes counts as 0.1 h, as many law firms and consultants bill.

    Common conversions

    15 minutes = 0.25 h · 20 minutes = 0.33 h · 30 minutes = 0.5 h · 40 minutes = 0.67 h · 45 minutes = 0.75 h · 7 h 30 min = 7.5 h · 8 h 15 min = 8.25 h · 37 h 30 min = 37.5 h · 0.1 h = 6 minutes · 0.2 h = 12 minutes · 0.6 h = 36 minutes.

    FAQ

Why does payroll use decimal hours?

    Because hours have to be multiplied by a rate. 8 h 20 min × $20 can't be typed into a calculator; 8.33 × $20 = $166.60 can.

Should I round to two decimals?

Two decimals (hundredths of an hour, 36 seconds) is the common payroll standard and is accurate to within a cent or two per day. Some employers round punch times to the nearest 6 or 15 minutes first; the time card calculator can apply that rounding for you.

My time card is in military time. How do I convert it?

Turn each punch into hours and minutes first (1930 is 7:30 PM), or let the military time converter work out the shift length, including shifts that cross midnight.

Can I convert more than 24 hours?

Yes. Type a weekly total such as 42:30 and you get 42.5 hours.
