Clock Out Time Calculator: What Time Do I Get Off Work?

Enter when you clocked in, how long you need to work and your unpaid lunch to see when to clock out. Or enter your hours so far this week to see when you reach 40. Night shifts that end after midnight work too. Nothing leaves your browser.

How to work out your clock-out time

Add the hours you need to work and any unpaid break to the time you clocked in. Clock in at 7:15 AM, work 8 hours, take a 30-minute lunch: 7:15 + 8:00 + 0:30 = 3:45 PM. Hours can be typed as 8, 8.5 or 8:30 (8 hours 30 minutes); times as 7:15 AM, 715a or 0715 (military time works).

Paid breaks don't push your clock-out time back: under US federal rules, short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are paid work time. Only meal breaks you clock out for (usually 30 minutes or more) are added.

Reaching 40 hours (and avoiding overtime)

Choose "reach a weekly total" and enter the hours you have already worked this week. The calculator subtracts them from 40 and adds the rest to today's start. With 32:15 done and a 9:00 AM start, you need 7:45 more: clock out at 4:45 PM, or 5:15 PM with a 30-minute lunch. Every minute after that is overtime under the federal 40-hour rule (time and a half for non-exempt employees). Some states, like California, also count overtime per day after 8 hours: check with the overtime calculator.

Not sure how many hours you have so far? Add up the week in the time card calculator, or convert hours and minutes with the time to decimal calculator if your pay stub shows 32.25.

FAQ

Does my employer's rounding change when I can leave?

It can. With the 7-minute rule, a punch at 4:37 PM counts as 4:30 and one at 4:38 counts as 4:45. Rounding should even out over time; see what it does to your real punches with the time clock rounding calculator.

Do I have to take a lunch break?

Federal law doesn't require meal breaks for adults, but many states do. In California, for example, a 30-minute meal period is required when you work more than 5 hours, and a second one after 10 hours (with some exceptions you can waive). Your state labor department lists the rules where you work.

What if my shift goes past midnight?

The calculator shows "next day" when your clock-out time is after midnight: 11:00 PM + 8 hours + 30 minutes = 7:30 AM the next day.
